We went to New York and did it at Sloan Kettering.“He went on to describe the emotional strain the disease put on his family, saying he was a teenager when he witnessed his mother’s prolonged struggle.“She had a lot of complications. I was very young at the time, about 19 or 20. We donated platelets and did everything we could to watch my mother go through this. My sisters were younger than me and it was a very traumatic time.” Sanjay also recalled a difficult period for his father, Sunil Duttrequiring him to return to India and complete work on his debut film Rocky, even though Nargis remained in a coma. At the time, he felt he couldn’t understand the decision.“My movie was coming out soon, so that was another pressure. My dad asked me to go back and finish the movie while my mother was in a coma. I just didn’t understand, why should I finish the movie while my mother was in a coma? But anyway, I did it and came back.”Recalling her final moments, Sanjay said he believed Nargis would hold on until she could return home. “I saw her fighting. I think she just wanted to get home somehow. She kept fighting until she came back, and once she got home, she gave up the fight. When she got back here, we lost her.”During the conversation, Sanjay also paid tribute to his father, saying Sunil Dutt was a disciplined parent whose principles continue to guide him. He credited him with instilling in people the values of humility and respect that he still lives by today.“He was a strict father. I think all the values we have today come from him, the value of respecting the elders, the elderly, the doctors. Even if the doctors are younger than me, I still respect them because they are my doctors.”Nargis died at the age of 51 in 1981 after battling pancreatic cancer, just days before the release of Sanjay Dutt’s acting debut, Rocky.
