Sana Saeed Opening up about one of the most difficult chapters of her life, she revealed she struggled with bulimia for six years before finally understanding she had an eating disorder. Sana, best remembered for her role as young Anjali in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, reflects on the shame, isolation and body image pressure that defined her journey, while sharing how she ultimately found the strength to fully recover over the next four years.
Sana Saeed opens up about the stigma of battling bulimia
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Sana Saeed recalled how for years she believed her condition was just a bad habit and not a recognized eating disorder.“In my mind, this was a bad habit I had developed that needed to be addressed on my own. I was extremely ashamed of it and thought I was the only one dealing with this problem. For six years, I had no idea what I was going through. I desperately wanted to get better and find a healthy way to eat, and eventually, I stumbled across a book about recovery that gave me the language for what I was actually dealing with. The real healing began then, and it took four years to fully recover.“Looking back, the actress admits she wishes she had known better about her condition sooner, adding that sharing her experience publicly now outweighs her fear of vulnerability.“Now that I’m healed, it’s very important to me that if my story can help one person feel less alone, then that’s worth more than the discomfort of being vulnerable in public.”She also clarified that she is not holding anyone responsible for her fight.“I don’t blame any one moment or any one person. I look back at a young woman who didn’t yet have the tools to separate her appearance from who she was, and circumstances that made that separation more difficult than it needed to be.”Sana revealed that the biggest turning point in her recovery came when she started thinking about the life she wanted to build.“The real turning point came when my reasons for wanting to be cured grew and I couldn’t imagine living with this disease in the future. I remember telling myself that if I got married, if I was too busy worrying about food, I would never truly enjoy dating my husband. If I had children, I never wanted to pass this on to the next generation. If this was going to be my future, I had to heal first.”According to the actor, imagining a healthier future prompted her to prioritize recovery over perfection.
Sana Saeed on body image and social pressure
Reflecting on the beauty standards she grew up with, Sana said the pressure to look a certain way extends far beyond the entertainment industry.“I remember being in college and noticing all my friends around me were on diets, trying to lose weight, talking about their changing bodies. It was Age Zero, weight loss was the rage, there were ten different diets on Google, and everyone I knew was running on a treadmill.”Discussions about health and nutrition were largely nonexistent during those years, she adds.“My world celebrates losing weight, not anything else, not how you feel, not whether you’re starving all day long, just to look a certain way. I think the industry just amplifies what a lot of us already have.”
Sana Saeed on recovery and recovery
Sana also shared a heartfelt note on Instagram earlier this month, revealing that she didn’t realize she had bulimia for years.“For years I didn’t know I had an eating disorder. Not because I didn’t suffer, but because I had never heard the term. Growing up, no one talked about it. There were no words to describe what I was going through, so I suffered in silence and alone for a long time.”She concluded her message by confirming that she had fully recovered and encouraging others facing similar predicaments to seek professional help.“I have made a full recovery and have never felt more at home in my body and in my life. If you are having difficulty, reach out to someone you trust or seek eating disorder support in your area. You deserve real help from qualified people. “
