Aamir Khan has strongly refuted accusations that he is a “brand ambassador of love jihad”, insisting that religion has never affected his family’s marriages. The actor, who married long-term partner Gauri Spratt in an intimate registration ceremony on July 5, said all of his marriages have been civil unions and that none of his partners have converted. His comments came as his marriage to Gowrie sparked political and religious debate online.
Aamir Khan says his family believes in inclusivity
In an interview with Deccan Chronicle’s Subhash K Jha, Aamir emphasized that interfaith marriages have been a part of his family for a long time and stressed that religious conversion was never a condition for any of these relationships.Responding to the allegations, he said: “The truth is, our family is very tolerant. Both my sisters are married to Hindus; my daughter is married to a Hindu. My cousin Mansoor is married to a Christian. The ‘Taare Zameen Par’ actor also clarified that neither his current wife Gauri Spratt nor his ex-wives Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao converted to Islam after their marriage. “Neither Gauri, Kiran nor Raina changed their religion because we had a civil marriage. Gauri is not even a Hindu, she is a Christian, not even a devout Christian. Life is getting more and more comical as time goes by.”Instead, Aamir Khan was married to Reena Dutta from 1986 to 2002 and then married film producer Kiran Rao in 2005. The two separated in 2021 but continue to co-parent their son.
Aamir Khan’s third marriage also sparked religious controversy
The actor’s latest comments come just days after his marriage to Gorey Spratt became the subject of controversy. According to ANI, Shahi chief mufti Maulana Ibrahim Hussain of Darul Ifta, a Muslim individual, has reportedly issued a fatwa against Aamir’s interfaith marriage, claiming that it was not allowed under his interpretation of Sharia law as Gauri was not a Muslim. In a video circulating online, the cleric said: “Muslim mard ke liye, iman walon ke liye, gair muslim se shaadi karna haraam hai.“The cleric further stated that it is a sin for a Muslim man to marry a non-Muslim woman, adding that those who refuse to acknowledge their guilt are ultimately responsible to God. Aamir Khan has so far not responded to the cleric’s remarks and his team has remained silent.
