Although he stepped down from royal duties in 2020 and moved to California, the visit marked an important moment in his ongoing commitment to supporting children with complex medical needs and their families.According to People magazine, Prince Harry visited Birmingham Children’s Hospital as a patron of WellChild. The event celebrates the 20th anniversary of the first WellChild nurse, a post created in 2006 and partly funded by Prince Harry. This position is designed to support children with complex medical needs and their families, coordinating care between hospital and home.

Prince Harry became a patron of WellChild in 2007 and continues to support the charity’s work to improve the quality of life for critically ill children and their families. He continued to attend the organization’s events, including the annual WellChild Awards in the UK, even as he abandoned his royal commitments and moved to North America with Meghan Markle and their two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5.
Prince Harry reflects on his long association with charity
Last year, Prince Harry attended the annual WellChild awards ceremony, where he spoke about his longstanding association with the organization, Hello magazine reported. “I still remember the first time I won the WellChild Award 18 years ago — before the beard, before the hair, you know how it was — I walked into the room and within about three minutes I realized two things: The love and energy in the room was palpable, and so was the unpredictability!” he said. “Secondly, I was completely hooked. This night has been a highlight of my year ever since, and it’s all because of you: these kids, this cause, and our ‘WellChild’ community.”

Prince Harry also spoke about how charities take on a different meaning after becoming a father. He recalled attending an awards show with Meghan in 2018, when they announced they were expecting their first child. “I remember holding Meghan’s hand tightly at the ceremony, both of us wondering what it would be like to be parents one day. And now, as a parent, to be here and talk to all of you, tugs at my heartstrings in a way that I never could have understood before I had my own children,” he said.Prince Harry visited the hospital upon arriving in the UK on Monday, July 6, and made several appearances throughout the week to participate in events related to the Invictus Games Foundation and other charitable causes. Meghan and their children did not attend the visit due to security concerns during their stay in London.
