After declining the award, S Janaki explained the reasons for her decision, The Hindu reported. “I am not blaming anyone for this late recognition. I have no complaints against the government. I am happy that the government has given me the honour,” she said. “If the government wants to recognize my work, I should receive India’s highest civilian award. I am not interested in other awards like the Padma Award,” she said. The late veteran singer also felt that artists from South India should be more recognized for their work and contributions.S Janaki has been working in the music industry for nearly 50 years and has sung approximately 40,000 songs in 17 languages. She said: “After singing about 40,000 songs in 17 languages and winning four national awards and multiple state awards, I feel that after 55 years in this field, they have given me so little now. I think I deserve more, don’t you?”

S Janaki said it was important to pay tribute to artists while they were still alive. She added, “P. Leela was awarded the Padma Award posthumously. Why can’t the government recognize people’s contributions during their lifetime?”Celebrities including Chiranjeevi, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Vijay, Boney Kapoor and Trisha Krishnan shared their condolences online.
