Petitioners seek review of certificate of censorship of village delineation
The case was filed as a public interest litigation by Chinnasamy, a resident of Usilampatti in Madurai district, Nakkheeran reported. The petition claimed that some scenes in the film Jana Nayagan defamed the people of Papapatti village. The petitioners submitted that the court could direct the authorities to re-examine the film’s censorship certificate, remove the objectionable scenes and temporarily halt the film’s showing in cinemas until the issue is reviewed. The plea said the controversial parts should be reconsidered before the film goes ahead with its release.
High court asks CBFC, producers and directors to submit replies
After hearing the matter, the bench ordered the Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the producers and directors of the film to respond to the allegations leveled in the petition. The court has chosen not to grant an interim injunction at this stage, instead seeking responses from all relevant parties before making a further decision. The case has now been referred to the next hearing on August 6.
