His health scare began in 2023, when he noticed a lump on his cheek; she discovered her own lump in 2022. According to People magazine, Melanie Shatner was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2022 after discovering a lump in her breast. Speaking about his cancer journey, William said in a joint interview, “I went to see an oncologist… and they performed surgery almost immediately for stage 4 melanoma.” Stage IV melanoma is a cancer that has spread from its original site to distant parts of the body, according to the National Cancer Institute. Previously, an aggressive diagnosis meant the median survival time would be less than a year. However, results have changed positively due to scientific improvements in treatments such as immunotherapy and other targeted therapies. As Melanie breaks down and thinks she’s dying from the deadly disease, she reveals the actor remains strong as ever. “I called you and I said, ‘I think I’m going to die,'” she recalled. Speaking of his family’s support, he said: “We are a very tight-knit family. We have overcome all kinds of difficulties that bind us together.
