In a video shared on Instagram on July 26, Raunaq Rajani claimed that he and his wife were detained by police while “illegally rounding up people” during a protest at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on July 22. “Due to the protests in Mumbai, my wife’s ribs were broken. It was broken by a police officer,” he says in the video.Describing the detention, Rajani said: “On July 22, 2026, my wife and I were detained by the police while illegally rounding up people during a protest in Shivaji Park. You may have seen the photo of the two of us in the police car. They pushed us in with brute force. I ended up with a sprained neck. Eventually she felt pain in her ribs. “He added that they initially chose not to make a fuss about their injuries given that others faced more serious police action. He shared a video in which people can be heard shouting: “Chhodo isko! Chhodo isko!”According to Rajani, a police officer in khaki uniform pushed him to the ground and then attacked his wife in a detention bus. He also claimed that a plainclothes police officer in a red shirt forced his wife into a police car, despite a female officer telling him “Ms. Conicaro.”Rajani further claimed that footage from inside the bus showed the same policeman in khaki uniform kicking his wife in the ribs. “Now, the policeman who pinned me to the ground, the policeman in khaki, he comes in… and you see how the man in khaki kicked my wife in the ribs,” he claimed, adding that he held his wife’s hand as the police separated them.
Raunaq Rajani slams police and files complaint
Rajani concluded her post by criticizing the excessive use of force by the Mumbai police. “This nationwide protest started only because the government abused the police machine and used it to beat innocent protesters. When we stood up for this exact cause in Mumbai, instead of retreating, the police tried to redouble their efforts and do the same to us,” he said.He added, “We don’t pay our damn taxes so the police can beat us! They’re supposed to protect us!”Rajani confirmed that he and his wife had lodged a complaint with Shivaji Park police station and were awaiting a reply to register an FIR. As of this writing, Mumbai Police has not officially responded to the allegations.
