Renowned British composer Estrice Sloane, whose works were performed in numerous music venues across the UK, has died. Sloan was 26 when they died. Sloan’s work has been praised and performed by some of the UK’s largest orchestras, including VOCES8, Paraorchestra, BBC Singers and BBC Concert Orchestra, among others.

The Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Philharmonic Society shared the news of their death with the world via their Instagram accounts. RNCM shared their photo in the post and wrote: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of composer and RNCM alumnus Asteryth Sloane at the age of 26.” The post further shared details about their education and degrees and discussed their “unique compositional approach and creativity.”The post further reads: “Asteryth’s music is known for its responses to the beauty and fragility of the living earth, as well as themes of identity and spirituality. Their musicological work explores the power of listening to bring us into a more intimate and ethical relationship with sound, as well as the rights of sound and sound sources. Most recently, Asteryth trained as a therapist, focusing on interpersonal and therapeutic settings. Our sincere condolences go out to Asteryth’s family and friends. “ The RPS also released news of her death, writing: “A blind composer with a unique approach and verve to composition, we salute Asteryth’s creativity and urge music lovers to continue listening to and performing Asteryth’s music to ensure it continues to resonate.”

Soon after the news reached the Internet, many people left messages to remember the composer. One social media user commented, “This is devastating news…Asteryth was a wonderful friend and musician, a sensitive and thoughtful artist, and an inspiration to all of us who knew them. Sending love to their family and friends,” while another shared, “I remember when we all saw their (incredible) work in first year, talking to them really helped build my confidence as a composer.” Such devastating news and my thoughts go out to everyone affected by this. “A third person also commented: “The world has suffered such a loss. I worked closely with Asteryth during my Masters and got to know them through their musical ideas and adventures. Very special bean and his music will live on,” while another mentioned, “Can’t begin to say how painful this is. Asteryth is a rare kind of person; kind to a fault, deeply caring, considerate… A great musician and passionate therapist.

One of her mentors, Tom Coult, also remembered working with her and posted a comment, which read: “I taught them in the Britten Symphony Young Composers Program when they were teenagers. An incredibly poetic, thoughtful, sincere soul, full of ideas and beauty. Extremely sad.”

More about composer Asteryth Sloane

The musician is best known for his award-winning compositions and has maintained a fairly successful career despite going blind at the age of two. Sloane’s work has won many accolades, including the Cambridge Young Composer of the Year Competition in 2016, winning the senior category of the BBC Proms Inspire Young Composers Competition in 2018 for Eylan Elegy, and being commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Classic FM.Their work often explores themes of environment, spirituality, philosophy and personal identity. In addition to his musical talents, Sloan also dabbled in other fields and was a noted researcher and psychotherapist.They completed a BA in Music (Composition) with First Class Honors and an MA in Composition and Musicology with Distinction. Sloan also holds an MA in Counseling and Psychotherapy from Keele University and is a registered PhD Researcher in Poetry and Ecolinguistics at the University of Gloucestershire.
