Adil Hussain on decades-old unresolved flood problem
Speaking to Hindustan Times, he said, “I have witnessed devastating floods every year since my childhood and this year it has been even more so. I feel very frustrated, angry, sad and depressed because floods are a recurring problem and the authorities have been unable to control it since I was growing up in Assam.” Unplanned towns grew, swamplands were filled with industry, and trees were felled. There is currently no investigation into how to solve this problem so that people in flood-affected areas can be cared for and reduce their suffering. ” He further added, “My sister’s daughter, my niece and their respective husbands’ houses were filled with water in Sivasagar, Upper Assam. I have been trying to find a way to help them but the situation is dire.” He also mentioned being in close touch with singer Papon, who is also stepping in to help people affected by the crisis.
Adil Hussain calls for proper flood management plan
Hussain said what was urgently needed was a comprehensive flood management strategy. “Indian scientists are launching satellites to the moon, many countries have solved the flooding problem. The Netherlands has reclaimed land from the sea. I can’t understand why one government after another cannot find an expert committee of engineers, land spatial planners, urban planners to jointly solve the problem.” He also mentioned the active use of social media to draw more attention to the crisis and called on people to step up support for relief efforts in Assam.
