Known for his passion for sustainability and technology-driven solutions, the actor transformed a barren land near Palani in Tamil Nadu into a thriving coconut plantation through a unique eco-friendly farming project.The initiative, which Madhavan started with his cousin Subayogan five years before the lockdown, has become a successful example of how to revive abandoned land by combining modern, organic and traditional farming practices.

Madhavan and Subayogan purchased a piece of dry land near Palani and began experimenting with permaculture methods. Over about three and a half years, the land was transformed into a green plantation with dwarf, non-hybrid coconut trees that produce sweet water coconuts.The recovery has also brought signs of a healthy ecosystem, with earthworms and native birds returning to the area.The program also aims to support local farmers. Some of the saplings produced in the plantations are sold at prices below market prices, helping farmers increase their income opportunities through coconut cultivation and sapling sales.
‘Every bit of learning is priceless’: Madhavan’s agricultural journey
In 2020, Madhavan opened up about the experience, describing it as one of the most fulfilling projects of his life.He told Mumbai Mirror: “It’s wonderful to see the land come to life and have the initial desired effect. From preparing the land with the right cover to stocking the right species of fish in the well, every bit of learning is priceless and well worth it.”The actor said the success of the project has inspired him to explore similar models in India and globally.“This has been one of the most satisfying and rewarding experiences of our lives. It’s great to see the land come back to life and create what it originally looked like,” he said.
Madhavan shares his love for gardening
Madhavan’s interest in sustainable living is often reflected on his social media. During the lockdown of 2020, when many people were trying out new hobbies, the actor gave his fans a glimpse of his terrace garden in Mumbai, where he grows vegetables and fruits.His terrace garden includes zucchini, beans, drumsticks and papayas. He also shared a video showing cherries grown at his home and wrote: “There is a new fruit on the terraces of Mumbai.”In addition to gardening, Madhavan has often shown interest in technological innovations related to sustainability and environmental awareness.
