Both players were found guilty of a Level 1 offense under Rule 2.5, which prohibits a player from using words, gestures or actions after being out that are likely to incite or provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman.
Khurram Shahzad fined, Abbas formally reprimanded
Khurram Shahzad was fined 15 per cent of his match fee and one run deducted for celebrating too close to West Indies batsman Shai Hope after he was dismissed in the 17th over of the home team’s second innings. Meanwhile, Mohammad Abbas was officially reprimanded and deducted a point for his furious celebration after dismissing Jomel Warrican in West Indies’ final innings. The ICC ruled that both celebrations were outside the acceptable standards of player conduct and had the potential to anger the dismissed batsman.
No formal hearing required
Both Abbas and Khurram accepted responsibility for their actions and agreed to the sanctions proposed by ICC Elite Group match referee Jeff Crowe. Therefore, the disciplinary proceedings can be concluded without the need for a formal hearing. The charges were made by on-field umpires Alex Wolfe and Richard Kettleborough and third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal. The ICC also confirmed that this was the first time the two players had been subject to disciplinary action in the past 24 months.West Indies defeated Pakistan by 90 runs in the first Test at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Taruba, Trinidad to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The historic match, the first Test hosted at the venue, ended on day four after a dominant performance from the West Indies pace battery. The defeat marked Pakistan’s eighth consecutive away Test defeat. Pakistan will now hope to level the series when the second and final Test begins on August 2 at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain.
