Sakshi, Arundhati lead Indian team to win
Sakshi Choudhary emerged victorious against Northern Ireland’s Caitlin Fryers in the women’s 51kg quarter-finals.Sakshi controlled the match from the opening minute, using her length advantage and sharp combinations to corner Friars in a unanimous 5-0 victory.“Her strategy is to fight at close quarters and she keeps her opponent close. My strategy is to box from a distance, which is my strength,” Sakshi told PTI after the fight.The Irish boxer tried to unsettle Sakshi with aggressive strikes, but the Indian kept his cool, kept his distance and responded with cleaner punches.Next, Arundhati Chowdhury faced a tougher challenge from New Zealand’s Morgan Henderson in the quarter-finals of the women’s 70kg category. After a fierce competition, Arundhati mustered up the courage to win 3-1 and advance to the semi-finals.
Shivaji, Ankush and Narender complete India’s perfect day
Former world youth champion Saxin Sivachi continued India’s strong showing as he beat Botswana’s Treje Moremi in the quarter-finals of the men’s 60kg category.The world number five Indian put in a composed performance to win 5-0 by unanimous decision after overwhelming all five judges’ scorecards.In the men’s 80kg quarter-finals, Ankush Yadav once again continued the Indian team’s winning streak with an outstanding performance. The silver medalist in last year’s World Boxing Cup final beat Seychelles’ Jade Mickok 5-0 to book a spot in the semi-finals.Ankush’s speed, movement and brilliant combination were too much for his opponents to handle as he maintained control throughout the fight.The last Indian boxer to complete a five-for-five sweep was Narender Berwal, who defeated Samoa’s Michael Seko in a dramatic men’s over 90kg quarter-final.In a game filled with referee interference and a two-point deduction against the Indian, Bolvar showed resilience. He twice forced his opponent to stand up for a count, including in the decisive final round, beating Seko 3-2 by split decision.India now has nine boxers with medals and they have already created history in Glasgow.
