Former Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming will take charge of the England Test squad, with reports suggesting the former New Zealand captain has emerged as the front-runner to replace Brendan McCullum in the red-ball. According to the Daily Telegraph, Fleming has been identified as England’s preferred candidate following a comprehensive interview process led by general manager Rob Key.
Fleming becomes ECB’s first choice
The Daily Telegraph reported that Fleming outperformed other contenders, including former England batsman Jonathan Trott and current England men’s performance director Richard Dawson, to secure the role. If appointed, Fleming would replace New Zealander Brendon McCullum, who recently resigned as England Test team coach after disappointing results in the longest format.Despite leaving the Test role, McCullum will remain in charge of England’s white-ball team, creating a unique coaching partnership. The pair had a long-standing relationship, with McCallum making his Test debut with Fleming as New Zealand captain. Fleming is also regarded as one of McCullum’s most important mentors throughout his cricketing career, a factor that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) reportedly believes will help ensure smooth coordination between the two coaching staffs.
The end of an era for Chennai Super Kings
The appointment reportedly comes shortly after Fleming ended his remarkable spell with the Chennai Super Kings. Fleming spent 18 years with CSK and its sister teams, including Texas Super Kings and Joburg Super Kings, establishing himself as one of cricket’s most successful coaches.During his time with CSK in the IPL, he led the team to five Indian Premier League titles and helped build one of the most consistent and successful dynasties in the competition.England are due to host Pakistan in a three-Test match next month.
