The biggest talk of the day was Gulveer Singh, who became the first Indian to win a medal in the men’s 10,000m event at the Commonwealth Games with a brilliant silver medal performance. Harjinder Kaur also continued India’s success in weightlifting, finishing second in the women’s 69kg category, improving on the bronze she won at the Birmingham Games four years ago.
The Indian boxing team continued their stellar performance with Jadumani Singh, Preeti Pawar and Priya Ganjath all reaching the semi-finals, ensuring India at least a bronze medal. While some athletes withdrew from boxing, swimming and athletics, there were also encouraging performances in para swimming and bowls as India continued to compete for medals in multiple events.
At the end of day six, India was ninth in the medal table with 12 medals, two gold, seven silver and three bronze, and now turns its attention to another action-packed schedule on day seven.
Several Indian athletes will be in the medal hunt on Wednesday, including Sanjana in the women’s 77kg weightlifting final, long jumpers Sreeshankar Murali and Lokesh Satyanathan, shot putter Manpreet Kaur and obstacle course runner Parul Choudhary. The boxing ring will once again see six Indians, including Sachin Siwach, Sakshi Choudhary, Ankush Yadav and Jaismine Lamboria, aiming to secure a semi-final spot. India will also be represented in swimming, para athletics, para swimming and lawn bowls, making day seven another big opportunity to climb the Commonwealth Games medal tally.
