The ICC confirmed that Gill’s promotion comes after Mitchell was absent from the Black Caps’ recent ODI tour of the Caribbean.“After the recent series between West Indies and New Zealand, there have been some changes in the latest ODI rankings as the absence of Black Caps right-hander Daryl Mitchell has resulted in Shubman Gill re-emerging as the number one batsman in 50-over cricket,” the ICC said.The governing body also noted that “Mitchell has held the top spot since January of this year.”Gill’s return to the top highlighted his stellar consistency in 50-over games and established himself as one of the top batsmen in the game. The India skipper had previously held the number one spot but was overtaken by Mitchell earlier this year.
