New Delhi: Former Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas Full support to Indian batting icon Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharmainsisted that the two veterans still have enough energy and should be part of India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.The legendary Pakistan batsman, popularly known as the ‘Asian Bradman’, dismissed concerns over the duo’s age and said their skill, experience and consistent scoring ability make them automatic contenders for the mega tournament, which is co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.“Both are very, very skilled and given their experience I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t play in the World Cup. As long as they are fit and continue to score runs, age should not be a factor,” Zahir was quoted as saying on a Pakistani television channel by Pakistani news agency PTI.

“Experience is everything”

Zaheer, who scored over 100 first-class centuries during his illustrious career and is regarded as one of Pakistan’s finest batsmen, believes that Kohli and Rohit possess qualities that will only grow stronger with time.The former Pakistan captain said after years of playing at the highest level, scoring runs becomes second nature to players of their caliber and their experience remains invaluable in major ICC events.He also assessed the fitness of the two Indian greats, saying Kohli continues to maintain excellent physical standards.“Kohli is still very fit and Rohit just needs to pay more attention to his fitness,” Zaheer observed.The Pakistan great added that India will benefit a lot from having both the veterans in the dressing room during the 2027 World Cup.His remarks come as speculation continues over the future of India’s senior stars despite both men’s match-winning performances in the ODI format.

Rohit’s century impresses Zahir

Zahir, who had special praise for Rohit after watching the former India skipper’s recent century against England, said the opener’s batting was still a joy to watch.“I watched Rohit score a hundred against England and it’s still a pleasure to watch him bat. He bowls with such ease and such wonderful timing,” he said.Rohit’s performance against England once again highlighted his 50-over credentials, while Kohli also continued his solid form, strengthening the argument that the experienced pair can still play a key role in the next World Cup.Reflecting on the changing nature of cricket in the modern era, Zaheer admitted that T20 cricket has introduced several innovative batting styles in the game. However, he insisted that the basics remain equally important and said that every batsman who aspires to succeed in different formats must master traditional batting such as cover batting and chipping.The former Pakistan captain also spoke about the future of cricket in his country, expressing his belief that better days are ahead.“Hope returns Babar Azam Being Test captain will turn things around. He is a world-class player and once he starts scoring consistently again it will have a positive impact on the rest of the team as well. The good times of Pakistan cricket will return,” Zaheer said.
