Karisma Kapoor Abhishek Bachchan publicly confirmed their relationship at Amitabh Bachchan’s 60th birthday celebrations in 2002, and they got engaged soon after. However, the engagement ended in early 2003 after just a few months. Despite years of speculation, neither the Kapoor nor Bachchan families have publicly revealed the reasons behind their separation. Having maintained a dignified silence on the matter, Abhishek is now happily married to Aishwarya Rai since 2007. Now, however, filmmakers Sunil Darshan The director of Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya Hai, who directed the duo, has now revealed that Karisma went to Bangkok to spend New Year’s Eve after their breakup and suddenly heard the news of her marriage to Sanjay Kapoor.Darshan spoke of his close relationship with Karisma during that period. He directed her in films like “Jaanwar”, “Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love” and “Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya” and saw her relationship with Abhishek develop over the years.Recalling that phase, Darshan said that by the time ‘Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya’ was launched, the couple had already planned to get married. Speaking to Hindi Rush, he said, “Their relationship started even before Ek Rishtaa started and it is going from strength to strength. When I planned Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya, they had already decided to get married. They were an attractive couple – son of Amitabh Bachchan and granddaughter of Raj. Ironically, the only film they were destined to do together was Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya. “The filmmaker still remembers the day the engagement was called off and revealed that he happened to be at Karisma’s house when the development process took place.“Coincidentally, I was at Karisma’s house when the engagement was called off. Unfortunately, the wedding was called off. I don’t think anyone can fully analyze the backlash or emotional turmoil that followed. Then she went to Bangkok for the New Year celebrations and suddenly I heard she was marrying Sunjay. I never understood that decision.”Talking about the long-running speculation surrounding the breakup, Darshan said he doesn’t believe anyone should be held responsible. He believes that relationships are deeply personal and outsiders cannot fully understand what is going on behind the scenes.“People blame Babita Ji, Jaya Ji, Karisma or Abhishek, but I think these things should be left to fate. Their relationship was fiery. Different couples show love differently and every relationship has its own dynamics. There were a lot of differences between the two.”Later that year, on September 29, 2003, Karisma married businessman Sunjay Kapur in a Sikh wedding. The couple welcomed two children, Samaira and Kian, but eventually went their separate ways. After a lengthy legal process, they finally divorced in 2016. In 2017, Sunjay married former model Priya Sachdev, and the couple gave birth to son Azarias. Sunjay Kapur died on June 12, 2025, at the age of 53, while playing polo in England. At the time of his death, he was married to Priya Sachdev.
