According to the Himachal Pradesh government, around 24,000 students who were previously studying in private schools have enrolled in government schools in Himachal Pradesh this academic year. The shift comes after the government introduced the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum in public schools across the state, a move it said was aimed at improving the quality of public education.Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu shared the data while addressing a public event at Nagrota Bagwan on Monday. Students have been admitted to nearly 150 public schools, he said, describing the increase in enrollment as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the public school system.
Government plans further changes to school education
The chief minister said the state government was implementing a slew of reforms in the education sector and expected major changes in government schools in the next two to four years.He said adoption of CBSE curriculum is one of the key steps to improve academic standards in government schools. The government insists the curriculum overhaul, among other reforms, is aimed at making public schools more competitive and improving learning outcomes.However, the state did not provide year-over-year comparisons of enrollment or detailed data explaining the increase.
Expansion plan Graduate Medical Education
Apart from school education, the government also announced measures to expand medical education in the state.According to the government, around 330 additional postgraduate seats are planned to be created in government medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh. Among them, Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (RPGMC), Tanda is planned to have 100 seats.The government says the proposal aims to increase the number of specialist doctors trained in the state and improve the availability of health services.
Medical infrastructure upgrade on the road
The chief minister said the state is also upgrading the medical infrastructure in government hospitals and medical colleges. Advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment is being installed in several institutions including RPGMC, Tanda.Himachal Pradesh has introduced robotic surgery in the government healthcare sector, he said. According to the government, three Tesla MRI scanners have been installed in all government medical colleges and facilities at Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla (IGMC) and Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialties (AIMSS), Jamyana have been commissioned.District and district hospitals are also equipped with 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner, PET scanner, CT scanner and cancer treatment equipment. The government says outdated medical equipment is being replaced as part of ongoing upgrades.
Announcements issued during Nagrota Bhagwan’s visit
The announcements were made during Suhu’s visit to Nagrota Bhagwan, where he reviewed development work in the area. The government says the initiatives in education and healthcare are part of a wider plan to improve public services across the state.The enrollment numbers and reform announcements come as several states are working to strengthen public schools and expand health infrastructure through increased public investment.
