New Delhi: The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has announced Geneva, Switzerland as the host city for the 2026 World Chess Championship, where defending champion Gukesh Dommaraju will lock horns with Uzbek challenger Javokhir Sindarov in what promises to be a historic showdown.The World Championship will be held from November 25 to December 15. Both Gukesh and Zindarov will be 20 years old when the competition begins. This will be the youngest World Championship in the history of chess.
Geneva selected as neutral site for this historic showdown
FIDE interim president announces venue Viswanathan Anand It said several countries had shown strong interest in hosting the prestigious event before the governing body chose a neutral venue.“Several countries, including India, the United States and Cyprus, have expressed strong interest in hosting the FIDE World Championship. After careful consideration of all suggestions, FIDE has decided to hold the tournament on neutral soil and bring it to Geneva, a city with a historic tradition of bringing countries and cultures together,” said Anand.“We look forward to welcoming the global chess community to Switzerland. Local chess enthusiasts will have the opportunity to experience world-class chess in person, while millions of chess enthusiasts around the world can watch online as the showdown for chess’s highest titles unfolds.”The announcement means Switzerland will once again host the world championship more than two decades after Brissago hosted the championship in 2004.Swiss Chess Federation president Andre Vogtlin hailed the decision as a landmark moment for chess in the country.“This is indeed a special day for Swiss chess. Twenty-two years after Brissago, a chess event of global significance is returning to Switzerland. For us, this is more than just good news – it is a defining moment for chess in our country and fills us with joy and motivation,” said Vogtlin.He added that hosting the event would significantly increase the popularity of the sport in Switzerland.“This is also a unique opportunity to further raise the public profile of chess in Switzerland and inspire new players to take up the sport. Over the coming weeks, we will regularly share the latest information on how we can use this major event to increase the popularity of the ‘Royal Game’ in our country,” he added.
The youngest World Championship match in history
The Geneva tournament will pit two of chess’ brightest young stars against each other for the sport’s highest prize.Gukesh will defend the title he won in Singapore in December 2024 when he defeated Ding Liren in the 14th and final Classical match to become the youngest undisputed world champion at the age of 18.Meanwhile, Zindarov secured his spot in the title race by winning the 2026 FIDE Candidates Championship in Cyprus with one round remaining, adding another major achievement to his tally of victories at the 2025 FIDE World Cup.The championship will consist of 14 classic games, and the first player to score 7.5 points will be declared the winner. If all 14 games are tied, the winner will be determined through a tie-break.FIDE said that as anticipation continues to build for one of the most anticipated World Championship clashes in recent history, more details on the event schedule, ticket sales, spectator access, media accreditation and side events will be announced in the coming weeks.
