Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT) revised Engineering Graduate Aptitude Test (GATE) Information Booklet 2027, introducing changes in Biotechnology (BT) syllabus and expanding the list of two paper combinations allowed in selected subjects. The revised manual has been uploaded to the official website of GATE 2027.The institute has clarified that the latest update is limited to the syllabus and paper portfolio. There is no change in the previously notified examination schedule, eligibility criteria or any other admission related guidelines.
More essay portfolios for interdisciplinary candidates
One of the key changes announced by IIT Madras concerns the two-paper combination that candidates can choose while applying for GATE 2027.Students opting for Robotics and Automation (RA) paper will now have more options in their second paper. Candidates can now combine RA with Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC) and Instrumentation Engineering (IN) besides Computer Science and Information Technology (CS), Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA), Electrical Engineering (EE) and Mechanical Engineering (ME).The list of combinations for other branches has also been expanded. Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC) candidates can now opt for Robotics and Automation (RA) as their second paper, along with the existing CS, DA, EE, IN and PH options. Likewise, Instrumentation Engineering (IN) candidates can now pair their thesis with RA in addition to Biomedical Engineering (BM), EC, EE and ME.These changes are expected to provide greater flexibility to candidates interested in interdisciplinary engineering fields.
Biotechnology Course Outline updated
Several other modifications have also been made in the Biotechnology course syllabus at IIT Madras in line with the latest trends in the field. Two old sections merged into one, Fundamentals of Bioengineering. Sections dealing with materials and energy balances, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena have been merged to create a more organized syllabus.A subject titled “Engineering Mathematics” now includes topics such as Bayesian statistics and vector calculus. There is increasing pressure in the general biology section on metabolism, immunology, and microbiology.Other topics included in the revised biotechnology syllabus include new topics in the field of recombinant DNA technologies, such as recombination-based cloning, biosensors, and -omics.
Exam pattern remain unchanged
Despite some changes in the syllabus, IIT Madras clarified that the exam format has not changed at all. There are 30 English question papers in GATE 2027, each worth 100 marks. There is also no change in exam dates.
What candidates should do
The revised syllabus is now in place and candidates planning to appear for GATE 2027 should read the updated information booklet carefully before starting preparations. Aspirants, especially those from the Biotechnology stream and those planning to opt for two papers, are advised to check the revised syllabus and paper portfolio to ensure that their preparation strategy is in line with the latest guidelines.
