Because something was happening – there was such a system.”) The host responded, pointing to the grim backdrop of the era, noting: “That’s when Gulshan Kumar was shot dead.”

Looking back on that disturbing chapter, Kumar describes witnessing several shocking incidents that left him on edge. Still, he said he would try to negotiate his way out of tense situations, although it usually came at a cost, and being asked to perform at a specific show he would simply agree because he felt he had no choice. Interestingly, he recalls, some of them ended up liking him and even laughingly offered to step in and deal with anyone who was bothering him. His answer, he said, was always the same: “mujhe dekhne ki zaroorat nahi hai, main khud ka dekhunga” (“I don’t need you to take care of me; I can take care of myself.”)
