Most entrepreneurs dream of building a successful company.Sujoy Chakravarty, Ravi Mehta and Biman Chattopadhyay did that, sold it to a global tech giant, and then chose a more uncertain path – building a quantum computer in India.After a successful exit, instead of taking the traditional route, three semiconductor veterans spent months working on one of the world’s most complex technologies. This decision ultimately led to the founding of Quanfluence, a Bengaluru-based startup that is currently one of the few Indian companies developing commercial quantum computing systems.Their story is about more than just entrepreneurship. It is about curiosity, deep engineering and the belief that India can build cutting-edge technologies for the world.

They leave successful careers to solve more difficult problems

The founders had already built impressive careers in the semiconductor industry before entering quantum computing.Sujoy Chakravarty, Ravi Mehta and Biman Chattopadhyay worked together at Texas Instruments (TI) for more than a decade, gaining expertise in chip design and semiconductor engineering.In 2012, they co-founded Silicon and Beyond, a company specializing in high-speed semiconductor intellectual property (IP). Six years later, the company was acquired by Synopsys, one of the world’s leading electronic design automation companies.For many founders, this will mark the pinnacle of their entrepreneurial journey.Instead, they started asking a bigger question:Can India build its own commercially viable quantum computer?Six months in the library changed everythingAfter the acquisition, the trio did something unusual.Instead of rushing into another startup, they spent nearly six months working on different quantum computing technologies.They explored superconducting quantum computers, ion trap systems and photonic computing before concluding that photonics offers the most practical path forward for India.Unlike superconducting quantum computers, which require temperatures close to absolute zero, photonic quantum computers use light and optical components to operate at room temperature.This decision became the basis for Quanfluence.To strengthen this joint venture, they brought together experts from academia and industry.Professor Anil Prabhakar of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras joined as a co-founder, and his research on optical Ising machines formed the company’s technical foundation. Professor Sandeep Goyal of IISER Mohali contributes expertise in quantum information theory, while Aditi Vaidya, former product head of Arista Networks, joins as chief product officer.

Building quantum technology in Bangalore

Quanfluence’s technology takes a different approach than many global quantum computing companies.Rather than relying on individual photons as qubits, its system uses electric fields from groups of photons, an approach the company believes provides greater reliability and scalability.Its optical Ising Machine currently handles 128 interconnect variables, and future versions are expected to address larger optimization problems.The startup has begun commercializing its technology through cloud access, with paying enterprise customers using the platform to handle complex computing workloads.
