IIT Madras conferred 3,518 degrees to 3,106 students at its 63rd convocation ceremony, with four students receiving prestigious awards for academic excellence and overall achievement. Degrees awarded include undergraduate, graduate, joint and double degree programmes, as well as 511 doctoral degrees.The convocation also recognized students who achieved the highest academic results and excelled in curricular and extracurricular activities. Top honors include the President of India Award, Bharat Ratna M Visvesvaraya Memorial Award, Institute Merit Award, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Award and the Governor’s Award.Four students honored at conferenceThe college recognizes outstanding achievements of students in different categories. Degrees awarded in engineering, management and research programsDuring the graduation ceremony, Professor V. Kamakoti, Dean of IIT Madras, awarded degrees to 3,106 graduates. The graduates include 812 B.Tech students, 302 dual degree B.Tech students, 617 M.Tech students, 143 M.Sc students, 123 MA students, 53 EMBA students, 84 MBA students, 32 PG diploma students and 201 MS students.511 doctorates were awarded at the ceremony, 16 of which were jointly awarded with foreign universities.Zanzibar President stresses role of technology and innovationIn his address to the graduates, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, spoke of the role of emerging technologies and the responsibilities of graduates in shaping the future.Dr. Hussein Ali Mwini said: “Each generation inherits the world as it is. You have an extraordinary opportunity and responsibility to shape the world as it should be.”Artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology and quantum technologies are changing the way people live, learn and work, he added. “Every great innovation offers humanity a choice. It can deepen inequality or expand opportunity. It can divide communities as well as unite them. This choice does not belong to the technology itself, but to its creators. ” he said.IIT Madras Zanzibar campus also comes under the spotlightDr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi also spoke about IIT Madras Zanzibar, the first international IIT campus in India offering IIT Madras academic degrees.“The establishment of IIT Madras Zanzibar, the first international campus of IIT Madras, represents more than just an educational milestone. It reflects a shared belief that knowledge should know no borders and excellence should never be limited by geography,” he said.Professor V. Kamakoti, Dean of IIT Madras, said that IIT Madras Zanzibar has entered a transformation stage as a global higher education center in East Africa. The campus currently has 130 students, including students from Tanzania, India, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Zambia.Dignitaries attended the 63rd Graduation CeremonyDr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras, chaired the meeting. Other dignitaries present included the Minister of Education and Vocational Training of Zanzibar, Her Excellency Leila Mohammed Musa and the High Commissioner of the United Republic of Tanzania to India, Her Excellency Ms Anisa Kapfi Mbega.Congratulating the graduates, Dr. Pawan Goenka said, “More than two years ago, IIT Madras opened its first international campus in Zanzibar. Today, its Chancellor stands before graduates in Chennai. This is no coincidence of geography. It is a partnership between our two peoples, built on the shared belief that education, innovation and human capital are the true foundations of lasting development.“After the conference, a department-level degree distribution event was held, and students received their degrees in person.
