Ever since the release of Mirzapur Movie, fans have been wondering how the popular crime series would make the jump from streaming to theaters without losing its signature intensity. We’ve tried our best to manage that and strike the right balance.“
‘Animals’ and ‘Durandhar’ changed the theater landscape
Singer said audiences are much more receptive to mature storytelling in cinemas than they were a few years ago. He feels that the recent success of adult films has created space for projects like Mirzapur Films to maintain their original tone.“I also think the audience has matured,” he said. “If you look at ‘Animal’, ‘Durandhar’ and a few other recent films, you can see that adult storytelling is now finding space in theaters. I think this also sets a precedent that allows us to bring a film like ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ to the big screen without diluting it.”
Turn a huge series into a feature film
Since its debut on Prime Video in 2018, Mirzapur has built a loyal fan base through its blend of crime, power struggles and family feuds. Condensing a vast universe into a dramatic work requires careful creative decision-making. Singer explained that the entire team worked together to ensure the essence of the franchise remained intact while adapting to the new format.“Everyone is watching the film. Everyone is watching the film and watching each other. Be it Farhan (Akhtar) and Ritesh (Sidhwani) as producers, we have their experience and vision behind us to make sure we don’t go off track and help us maintain the right balance.”
The script keeps evolving
The script was written by series creator Puneet Krishna, and the team continued to revise the script to determine what deserved a place in the film and what needed to be retained to maintain narrative focus.Reflecting on the process, Singh said: “Of course, Puneet had such a great starting point in the film. From there, it became a process of evolving the material and talking about how much to keep, how much to leave out, where it should be a little indulgent and where it should completely compete with the narrative.”

In other places, we’re bringing back things they love but presenting them in new ways. It’s a balance of both,” he said.He further added, “They will discover moments that they totally didn’t expect and things they really enjoy experiencing in new formats. We have the fan-favorite elements that people have come to expect, but these characters are also doing new things in a completely new story. Even the dynamics between them are different. “
