The summer festival at King’s Sandringham Estate in Norfolk has been canceled at 11am due to low ticket sales and rising costs. Heritage Live music festival, originally scheduled for August, would have featured performances by major international recording artists including Lionel Richie, Christina Aguilera and Eric Clapton. However, organizers announced on Monday that the concert would no longer take place after a financial rescue package fell through at the last minute.According to The Telegraph, music festival organizer GCE Live confirmed its cancellation after failing to secure investment. The announcement also includes the cancellation of Heritage Live festivals at two other heritage estates: Audley End in Essex and Englefield in Berkshire, which had been due to take place on different dates in the summer.
Festival size and expected line-up
Around 30,000 fans are expected to attend the Sandringham Music Festival, which takes place from 19 to 23 August. The opening act is expected to be headlined by Janet Jackson, with support from Soul II Soul and Wyclef Jean on the first night. Lionel Richie is set to perform his only UK show of the year on August 20, with Christina Aguilera, Craig David and Blue set to perform the following night, August 21. Ricky Martin, the Sugababes and Olly Alexander are scheduled to take place on August 22, with Eric Clapton, Ronnie Wood and Andy Fairweather Low closing the festival on August 23.
Expansion and location of Heritage Live
The festival site holds special significance due to its proximity to the residences of the royal family. The concert will be held about two miles away in a new house on the Royal Estate. In 2023, King begins hosting Heritage Live concerts, a three-day event. The Sandringham edition is a big change from last year, extending the event to five days and providing glamping and camping space in the fields surrounding the venue.
Reasons for cancellation and market challenges
A Heritage Live spokesperson explained the circumstances of the cancellation. A spokesperson said: “We have been working desperately behind the scenes to agree an investment and equity package to ease the burden of an incredibly difficult year, but this last beacon of hope was dashed at the 11th hour, making it impossible to go ahead.” Organizers added: “As one of the few remaining independent organizers in the UK, we compete in the wider contemporary entertainment sector in an increasingly saturated festival market.
