Ed Sheeran inspires UK government’s latest music initiative
The government’s latest “Music Library” scheme will be designed in conjunction with the Irish singer’s foundation, which is named after the singer, Sky News recently reported. As confirmed by a statement from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, teachers, youth clubs and industry experts will come together to provide insights into developing the plan.According to reports, around £12.5 million has been allocated for the upcoming project. The main aim of the upcoming scheme is to ensure that young people across England have free access to guidance and education everywhere. In addition, approximately 150 library authorities have access to funding to create studios, recording studios, mixers and purchase various equipment needed to set up spaces for children.Overall funding for the program will come from the dormant assets program. The program was developed by the government to repurpose unclaimed financial resources and assets and allocate them to such initiatives. Culture Minister Lisa Nandy echoed these sentiments, sharing: “Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. After a decade of mindless acts of destruction that stripped culture and creativity from too many classrooms and communities, we are putting music back at the heart of education, investing in creative careers and supporting grassroots music across the country.”She added, “It belongs to everyone, not just the privileged few.”The initiative has been growing since 2024 when the Shape of You singer and cultural secretary visited the non-profit organization that provides live music and youth arts organizations for young people.Last March, Sheeran joined Harry Styles and Stormzy in writing an open letter to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Musicians are calling on the government to take action and initiatives to save England’s music infrastructure. On the other hand, during one of his recent concerts, the singer announced that he will soon be taking another break to focus on his family and personal life.
