I dedicate this honor to every Tamil. Every Tamil should celebrate this and consider it as a reward for their homeland. Parents and teachers should pass on the greatness of this award and the richness of Tamil language to the younger generation. “His heartfelt words soon went viral on social media, with many praising him for his emotional tribute to Tamil.
Vairamuthu reflects on his beliefs
Varamuthu also said that such recognition should not be seen as the final measure of Tamil literary heritage. He said, “The greatness of the Tamil people does not become complete with Jnanpith, nor does it end with this award. It is only a continuation of a long journey. The Tamil people should continue to share their knowledge, civilization, culture and way of life with the world from generation to generation.” His speech expressed his belief that Tamil literature has always been of integrity and will continue to grow regardless of the accolades received by individuals.
Vairamuthu responds to criticism with cautious message
Vairamuthu chose to respond calmly to the criticism surrounding the award. He said, “If there is no opposition, it is not a real award. It is right to accept criticism. What is right or wrong should not be decided by the creator but by the reader.”Winner of seven National Film Awards and a Sahitya Akademi Award, Vairamuthu’s recognition of Jnanpith marks a monumental and historic milestone for modern Tamil poetry on the national stage.
