former indian batsman Wasim Jaffer The Indian team management is believed to have pushed teenage batting star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi into international cricket, believing the decision was more influenced by public excitement than cricketing logic.Jaffer’s remarks came after India recalled Sanzhou Samson In the fifth and final T20I against England, he scored 14, 13 and 15 runs in three games, losing his first match 15 years ago. Samson started the series but was left out from the second game to suit up with Sooryavanshi before returning for the series final.“I think we rushed Vaibhav into this,” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel. “There was a lot of hype around him in the media and the public was very excited to see him play. Otherwise, I have said that India should stick with Sanju Samson. “The former opener feels Soriyavanshi will benefit greatly from spending more time with the national team before making his debut.“Waibhav had to wait for the opportunity and when it came, he could have grabbed it. He was still young and could learn a lot just by being around the team and watching cricket from the outside,” Jaffer said.
‘We got carried away with the hype’
Jaffer questioned the ongoing changes at the top level in India, saying the management seemed to be reacting to the growing buzz surrounding the teenager.“It feels like we got carried away with the media hype. Every time Vaibhav doesn’t play, there’s a lot of talk about it,” he said.“I just think he should wait. If you absolutely believe that Sanju is not in good form or not playing well, then you can make that decision. But in the end, it feels like you pushed Vaibhav into the team,” he added.Jaffer also expressed surprise at the handling of Samson, who has been left out of the Indian squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, while Surivanshi has retained his place.“Then, after giving him three games, you bring Sanju back. Sanju himself has only played one game and now he is left out of the Zimbabwe tour. Taking him out of the Zimbabwe tour is also a bit strange to me because I am sure he will want to play,” Jaffer said.“The fact is that he has only played one format for India. He deserves regular opportunities. I am sure Sanju Samson will be part of the plans for the next World Cup because he is a match-winner. The way things are unfolding really surprises me,” he added.
Yuvraj supports teenage prodigy
While Jaffer appealed for patience, the former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh Full of confidence in Sooryavanshi’s long-term future. In an interview with JioHotstar, Yuvraj compared the evolution of India’s fearless batsman to the Terminator film series and described Sooryavanshi as the latest and most advanced version after himself and his protégés Abhishek Sharma.“I always call myself a terminator. Now there is Abhishek Sharma in Terminator 4, who is four times better than me. After him there is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in Terminator 6, who is even more evolved,” Yuvraj said. The World Cup-winning all-rounder added that he would be happy to mentor the youngster in the future and believes that despite early setbacks, Suryavanshi still has the potential to enjoy a long and successful international career.
