New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) conferred degrees to 2,265 students at its 28th convocation ceremony held on July 12, 2026. The graduating batch includes undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and research program students from multiple disciplines.Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, CEO of Anusandam National Research Foundation (ANRF) attended the ceremony as the chief guest. Dr. Prahlada Rama Rao, Acting Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Guwahati, presided over the event, and Professor Devendra Jalihal, Dean of IIT Guwahati, delivered a conference report.

Students receive medals for academic excellenceSaptarshi Mukherjee, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in data science and artificial intelligence, has been awarded the President of India’s Gold Medal after achieving the highest cumulative performance index among qualified undergraduate students.Atri Chattopadhyay, B.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Engineering, received the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal for her overall excellence in academic performance, extra-curricular activities and social service.Praneel Bhattacharya, M.Sc., Chemical Engineering, received the Assam Governor’s PG Gold Medal, and Sarthak Kapoor, B.Sc., Computer Science and Engineering, received the Assam Governor’s UG Gold Medal. The college also awarded College Silver Medals to 18 students in recognition of their academic performance.

Institute expands research and innovation initiativesAddressing the graduates, Professor Devendra Jalihar said: “As our graduates embark on diverse career paths, whether in higher education, industry, entrepreneurship, administration, management or academia, I extend my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to each of them.”IIT Guwahati published 2,478 research papers during the year and continues to expand research infrastructure, incubation facilities and industry engagement initiatives, he added.The institute is currently undertaking 290 research and consultancy projects worth Rs 300 crore. It has also launched M.Tech program in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in line with the National Education Policy 2020.Focus on research, global partnerships and entrepreneurshipChief guest Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman advised the graduates to continue learning and utilize their knowledge to create meaningful social impact. “In the age of artificial intelligence, the real differentiators will be deep knowledge, sound judgment and the ability to define meaningful questions rather than just generate answers,” he said.IIT Guwahati has collaborated with institutions in the UK and Japan in areas such as artificial intelligence, healthcare, research and student mobility. The institute also supports start-ups in the healthcare, agritech, defence, cleantech and fintech sectors.IIT Guwahati has over 26,790 graduates in its 32-year history and currently has 455 faculty members and over 8,600 students in its academic programmes.
