Admission to Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar will become slightly easier from the 2026-27 academic session. The National Medical Council (NMC) has approved the creation of 50 more seats for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), taking the annual admissions of the college from 200 to 250.The approval was obtained under Section 28(3) of the National Medical Board Act, 2019, by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) by issuing a Letter of Permission (LoP). Seat expansion follows NMC assessment
The Ministry of Health and Medical Education said the increase in funding is aimed at strengthening medical education and healthcare services in Jammu and Kashmir.Officials said the decision was taken following an evaluation by MARB under the Undergraduate Medical Education Standards Regulations (UGMSR) 2023. According to PTI, according to the latest approval, the additional seats will be available from the upcoming academic year 2026-27.
Second rise in two years
The latest expansion comes a year after GMC Srinagar got approval for 20 more MBBS seats.The increase in admission capacity is expected to create more opportunities for medical aspirants while increasing the medical education infrastructure in the state, the department said.Officials said the latest approval further expands the college’s enrollment as Jammu and Kashmir continues to increase government medical education capacity.
