Belgium advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup and brought the United States’ home tour to an abrupt end with a brutal attacking performance that defeated host United States 4-1 at Seattle Arena. Charles de Cotrare scored twice in the first half before Hans Vanaken capitalized on a costly defensive error and Romelu Lukaku added the final touch in stoppage time. Despite Mauricio Pochettino’s side dominating possession for long periods of time, Belgium’s clinical finishing and ability to punish mistakes proved decisive in Belgium’s quarter-final meeting with Spain at the Los Angeles Arena on July 10.
Belgium took control of the game in the first half with a devastating double
The developments focus on FIFA’s controversial decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s automatic one-match ban following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina and allow the forward to start after FIFA invoked Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code. However, once the game started, Belgium quickly turned the focus to events on the pitch.Rudi Garcia’s side soon found their feet and Belgium nearly found a breakthrough when their corner was only partially cleared by Timothy Castagni on the edge of the area. The full-back’s powerful shot into a crowded box forced Matt Freese into a superb diving save, providing an early warning of the pressure to come.Belgium continued to dominate the opening session. Their aggressive pressing repeatedly disrupted the U.S. attack, with Dodi Lukebakio charging forward before cutting the ball back to Youri Tielemans. After reaching the penalty area, Tielemans’ shot went just wide, missing another promising opportunity. In the ninth minute, the breakthrough finally came. Leandro Trossard burst into space down the left before delivering a teasing cross that the U.S. defense could not cleanly deal with. When the loose ball bounced dangerously inside the box, Nicholas Raskin reacted fastest and coolly passed the ball across the six-yard box after gaining possession. Charles de Cotrare timed his move well and coolly fired home from close range to give Belgium a 1-0 lead.

The Americans settled down after a rough start and enjoyed longer periods of possession, finishing the game with 57% possession and an impressive 89% passing accuracy, compared to Belgium’s 83%. However, despite effective possession, clear-cut chances were few and far between against Belgium’s organized defense.Their equalizer came in the 31st minute from a lucky but well-deserved set-piece. After Balogun was fouled outside the penalty area, Malik Tillman took the free kick and fired a powerful shot. The shot hit the Belgian wall and then took a nasty deflection, leaving Thibaut Courtois completely unstuck and the goalkeeper stranded as the ball rolled into the opposite corner, 1-1.

Any momentum generated by the equalizer disappeared almost immediately.Belgium responded within two minutes, a perfect display of their attacking prowess. Trossard once again found space on the left wing and curled a tempting cross into the box. Dectrare slinked away from his marker, made a perfectly timed run to receive the ball, and headed home from close range behind Friese to extend Belgium’s advantage to 2-1. The quick reaction stunned Seattle fans, with Mauricio Pochettino visibly frustrated on the touchline after watching his side concede a goal almost immediately after the equalizer.

Friese’s mistakes proved decisive and Belgium will punish every mistake
The United States tried to add more urgency at the start of the second half, pushing Christian Pulisic and Balogun further forward in search of another equalizer. However, Belgium kept their composure defensively while continuing to pose a threat in quick transitions. The game was effectively decided in the 57th minute thanks to a catastrophic defensive error.Belgium’s long ball over the top seemed relatively harmless, but the confusion between the U.S. defender and goalie Matt Freese proved costly. Freese sprinted outside the penalty area with the intention of getting out of danger, but hesitated under pressure from Dirk Trarey. The ball fell to substitute Hans Vanaken, who immediately recognized the unanswered goal and calmly fired a long-range shot into the empty net. Veteran defender Tim Rehm sprinted backwards and launched a sliding attempt to stop the goal, but the ball easily crossed the goal line to give Belgium a 3-1 lead.

The setback became even more devastating when captain Christian Pulisic was forced off after a collision with Tielemans, further diminishing the U.S.’s attacking threat in the closing stages.Despite falling behind, Pochettino’s side continue to look for a way back into the competition. Sebastian Berhalter fired a powerful long-range effort from close range, only to miss just wide, while Balogun finally found space in the Belgium backline after a superb lofted pass. The striker advanced from a tight angle and tried to beat Courtois at the near post, but the towering Belgian goalkeeper held his ground and made another important save to deny the home side any hope of a counterattack.Belgium’s attacking efficiency remains the decisive difference between the two teams. Although the U.S. dominated possession, Belgium consistently created clearer openings, taking a total of 15 shots, seven on target, and five corner kicks, while the U.S. had just six shots on goal, only two of which tested Courtois. As the U.S. attacked in stoppage time, Belgium delivered the final blow on the counterattack. Jérémy Doku accelerated into space before sending a perfect through ball into the path of Romelu Lukaku. The veteran striker overcame defenders, dribbled into the penalty area and confidently fired past Friese in the third minute of stoppage time to seal a 4-1 victory.

Belgium did not receive a single yellow card on the night, while the United States had a frustrating night in Seattle with two yellow cards. Ultimately, possession statistics meant little as Belgium displayed ruthless efficiency in both penalty areas, punishing the United States for every major mistake and ending the co-host nation’s World Cup run.The win moves the Red Devils into the quarter-finals, where they will face Spain in Los Angeles on July 10. For the U.S., hopes of reaching the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2002 have been dashed as defensive missteps and missed opportunities brought an otherwise encouraging home campaign to a disappointing end.
