Schools and colleges across Mumbai remained closed today as authorities declared a holiday as the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall. Precautionary measures have been extended to educational institutions in Thane and Palghar districts as officials prioritize the safety of students as heavy showers and high winds are expected.While classrooms remain closed, government and private offices continue to operate as usual. Municipal authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel as the city is set to face more rainfall, with several areas experiencing waterlogging and damage over the past few days.Schools and colleges declare holidaysFollowing a weather warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for all government, private and citizen-run schools and colleges in Mumbai. The decision also applies to educational institutions in Thane and Palghar districts.The civil affairs department said the move was a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students given the expected heavy rainfall and strong winds. Authorities also said schools could offer online classes if needed.Flexibility granted by regional authoritiesOfficials said district authorities and school principals have been empowered to assess local weather conditions and take decisions on holidays if necessary. This arrangement enables management to respond quickly if rainfall intensifies in a particular area.The advisory states that while educational institutions remain closed today, government and private offices will continue to operate. However, authorities urged citizens to go out only when necessary to avoid inconvenience caused by heavy rain.Heavy rain continues to affect MumbaiHeavy rainfall has continued in Mumbai and surrounding areas for days, leading to waterlogging, traffic disruptions and tree collapse in different parts of the city. Incessant rains since late June have also caused casualties, including the death of a male student.Earlier this week, Mumbai University canceled exams scheduled to be held in Palghar and Panvel due to adverse weather conditions. With more rainfall expected, authorities are calling on residents to remain vigilant and follow official advice.
