On July 4, in the first round of the round of 16 at Houston Stadium, the Moroccan team performed well in the second half and won 3-0. The Canadian team ended its extraordinary journey to the 2026 World Cup at home. Azzedine Ounahi scored twice before substitute Soufiane Rahimi added a third in stoppage time to seal the Atlas Lions’ place in the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of France or Paraguay.The final score didn’t quite reflect the intensity of the opening game. Canada started with more urgency and borne much of the early attacking threat, but Morocco combined defensive discipline with clinical finishing to punish every mistake after the break. Canada’s early pressure combines with Morocco’s resilience
Jesse Marsh’s side started aggressively, pressing high and forcing Morocco deep into their own half. Canada won a staggering 11 corner kicks compared to the only one Morocco received the entire game and looked more dangerous in the opening game despite only having three of their 10 shots on target.The first warning came in the sixth minute when Richie Laryea broke through from the left before cutting the ball back to Jonathan David, whose shot from a tight angle was deftly pushed away by Yassine Bounou. Moments later, Tani Oluwasei broke away from his marker in the box and fired a powerful shot, with Bono once again doing well to stop play and maintain the deadlock.

Although Canada enjoyed the early moments, Morocco slowly wrested control with longer possessions. Mohamed Wahbi’s side finished the game with 56 per cent of possession, completing 340 of 399 passes for an impressive 85 per cent accuracy and gradually slowing down the frenetic pace Canada tried to impose. The hosts completed 273 of 347 passes with an accuracy of 78%, but they found it increasingly difficult to break through Morocco’s organized defense.
Six yellow cards in the first half set the tone for Morocco’s attack after the restart
The game became more and more intense as Canada’s offense became increasingly frustrated. Referee Michael Oliver was forced to take disciplinary action on several occasions due to intense challenges from both sides.Redouane Halhal became the first Moroccan player to receive a yellow card in the 19th minute and Morocco suffered an early setback when Ismael Saibari was forced off with a knee injury two minutes later and Soufiane Rahimi replaced him. In the 39th minute, Achraf Hakimi and Richie Laryea both received yellow cards after a fierce confrontation, and the physical confrontation between the two sides became more intense. Jonathan David went into the referee’s notebook for a tactical foul three minutes later, while Azzedine Ounahi and Bilal El Khannouss also received yellow cards before the break, resulting in six players being booked before half-time in one of the most competitive starts to this World Cup.

After play resumed, Canada kept fighting but almost immediately received another yellow card when Luc de Fougeres was brought down just outside the penalty area in the 48th minute. Seconds later, Morocco punished the error with a well-rehearsed set-piece.

Instead of taking a direct free-kick, captain Achraf Hakimi disguised his intentions by curling a perfect pass across the edge of the box. Unahi timed his run perfectly, taking the first ball and firing a low right-footed shot through a group of players before tapping the ball into the bottom right corner in the 49th minute after a full save from Maxime Crepeau.
Clinical completion determines competition
The first goal completely changed the tactical picture. Canada were now forced to commit more forwards in search of an equalizer, allowing Morocco to exploit the space left.Marsh brought in Cyle Larin in an attempt to inject new attacking energy, although the substitute soon found his way into the referee’s notebook after an overly challenging challenge in the 66th minute.Despite only having five shots on goal all afternoon, Morocco showed remarkable efficiency. Four of the shots tested Crepeau, three of which found the back of the net.Their second goal came in the 81st minute through a devastating counterattack. Brahim Díaz broke through midfield with purpose before sending a clever through ball into the path of Ounahi. The midfielder kept his composure, took the pass in stride and fired past Crepeau for a brace, effectively ending Canada’s hopes.

Morocco scored the final goal as the home side brought nearly every outfield player forward in stoppage time. In the 90th+7th minute, Diaz was once again the provider, releasing Rahimi with the Canadian defense straining. The substitute made a quick break before calmly slotting his shot past the advancing goalkeeper to seal a crushing 3-0 victory.
Canadian dream shattered, Morocco moves on
Statistics illustrate the contrasting approach perfectly. Canada took twice as many shots as Morocco, won 11 corners to one more than Morocco, and applied relentless pressure for long periods of the game. However, Morocco’s excellent game management ultimately proved decisive. They dominated possession, passed the ball more accurately, committed just 14 fouls compared to Canada’s 23, and converted three of four shots on goal.

Unahi was deservedly the man of the match after a clinical second-half brace, while Hakimi directed the attack from right-back and provided a cleverly disguised assist for the breakthrough goal. Diaz stepped up in transition and changed the situation with two decisive assists in the closing stages, while Bono’s crucial early save ensured Morocco survived Canada’s strongest period.The win takes Morocco into the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup, where they will face either France or Paraguay in Foxborough. For Canada, the loss ended the best World Cup run in the country’s history. Although their game ended in front of a home crowd, reaching the knockout rounds for the first time represented a landmark achievement that could become a defining moment for Canadian football.
