former england captain Michael Vaughn Launching scathing attack on England leadership, calls for head coach appointment Brendan McCallum After cricket’s general manager Rob Key resigns Ben Stokes ended his international career.Stokes, 35, announced his retirement from international cricket and gave up the England captaincy after England suffered a 160-run defeat to New Zealand in the third Test at Trent Bridge on Sunday. The result resulted in a 2-1 series defeat and continued England’s disappointing run in the longest fixture.England have won just two of their last 10 Test matches, including losses to Australia and New Zealand, and the home series against India.Regarding the team’s recent performance, Warne said he has reached the point where he can no longer accept the standards of the England team.“When I saw that on the fourth night last week, I said ‘no, as ex-players we can’t accept that’,” Warne told the Sticking to Cricket podcast.“It was during that period that I watched the games and I thought ‘no, that’s enough’. English cricket has to be better than this.”Vaughan believes the time has come for sweeping changes at the top level and questions whether McCallum is the right man to lead England forward despite his popularity.“I think Buzz McCullum is a great man but he’s not a great coach and for England, as a former player and fan of English cricket, we should be aiming to be the No. 1 team in the world and we’re seventh at the moment.“We won two games in 10 games and those two wins came at Lord’s on a manure pit and the two-day MCG, so the only two games we won were in farmers’ fields.“That’s not right.”The former captain says England supporters deserve better and insists the team’s current trajectory is unacceptable.“I want change. I’ve seen enough. I’m passionate about English cricket but I hate watching it and you can’t tell me that 200-odd thousand people think differently,” Warne said.“When your opposition laughs at you in your own backyard, you’ve had enough. We need to move on.”Warne also raised questions about the future of Rob Key, who has been in charge of England cricket since replacing him. Ashley Giles General Manager in 2022. Later that year, Key appointed McCullum as Test coach before extending his responsibilities to all three international formats in September 2024.Warne said England’s woes were not limited to Test cricket, with the team’s white-ball performance also declining under the current structure.“I was frustrated watching it, it was ridiculous,” Vaughn said. “You have to say, Rob Key’s job is on the line. It has to be on the line. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rob Key leaves.“They’re not coached very well. You’re telling me, if Andy Flower was in charge… would this team get the results they’re getting? No chance.”With Stokes’ retirement ending one of England’s most influential eras, Vaughan believes the team must now use this moment to reset its leadership and direction after a long run of disappointing results.
