Students who failed the Assam Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSLC) examination 2026 will have to return to regular Class 10 studies before they are eligible to appear for the board examination again. The Assam School Education Board (ASSEB) Division I has made it mandatory for unsuccessful candidates to re-admit to Class 10, introducing a structured pathway for those who plan to try again. The directive was issued through a formal notification issued by the Board on June 23, 2026.
Candidates who fail the exam must re-enroll
As per the revised instructions, students who failed the HSLC examination 2026 cannot directly register for the next board examination. Instead, they must first secure re-admission to Class 10 and attend regular classes before being eligible to sit for subsequent HSLC examinations.The move is intended to ensure students receive ongoing academic instruction rather than independent preparation without classroom participation.
Students can return to their current school
The notification states that unsuccessful candidates can seek re-admission to the same school where they appeared for the 2026 HSLC examination.However, the board also offered alternatives given that some schools may not be able to accommodate returning students. In this case, students can enroll in another school under the same examination center where they originally appeared for the HSLC examination.The purpose of this provision is to ensure that no student is denied the opportunity to continue their studies due to institutional constraints.
Registration number remains unchanged
ASSEB also clarified that students joining Class 10 will not be allotted new registration numbers. Instead, they will retain the registration number originally issued to them and must use the same registration details when sitting future HSLC examinations. This measure is expected to maintain continuity of student records and examination documentation.
Options for changing elective subjects
The board has provided flexibility to re-admitted students by allowing them to change elective subjects after rejoining in class 10th.However, this option is only available before the semi-annual inspection. After the half-year examination, applications for changing elective subjects will no longer be accepted.Therefore, students planning to opt for different electives are advised to complete the process before the stipulated deadlines.
