In the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup held at MetLife Stadium, France defeated Sweden 3-0 with excellent offensive efficiency. While the score suggested France were completely dominant, the narrative of the game was shaped by the contrast between France’s razor-sharp transition and a resilient but ultimately overwhelmed Swedish defence. Didier Deschamps’ side showed why they are World Cup favorites as they progressed to the last 16 to face Paraguay, powered by Kylian Mbappe’s sublime brace and Bradley Bakla’s breakthrough goal.

Tactical landscape and early French offensive

From the opening whistle, the French team established control of the tempo of the game and dominated the game with 61% ball possession. In a fluid 4-2-3-1 system, the French midfield pairing of Adrien Rabiot and Aurélien Tchouaméni functioned as a perfect double holding midfielder. They passed the ball with a 91% passing accuracy, completely suffocating Swedish centers Lucas Bergvall and Yassin Ayari.

French wingers Ousmane Dembélé and Bradley Bakela forced Sweden’s full-backs into their own territory, effectively turning Sweden’s original 3-4-3 formation into a desperate 5-4-1 low block. In the first 20 minutes, the French team launched a series of attacks and shot a total of 25 times in 90 minutes. Michael Olise did an excellent job in the pocket, pulling Victor Lindelöf out of position and creating space for Mbappé to exploit. Despite the relentless pressure, Sweden did their best to counter the French attack. Swedish goalkeeper Jakob Wedel Zetterström looked like a giant in the early stages, making nine saves throughout the match, including several against Dembélé’s close-range shots and William Saliba’s powerful headers.

Breakthrough: Kylian Mbappe opens the Swedish wall (45′)

At halftime, Sweden looked ready to retreat to the dressing room with a hard-earned scoreless draw. However, France’s sharp offensive instinct finally broke the deadlock in the 45th minute. The attack started deep in the French half, with Jules Conde intercepting an ambitious long ball to Alexander Isak. Conde quickly passed the ball to Chumeni, who found Dembélé breaking through from the right wing.

Dembélé played his trademark, devastating diagonal pass from the edge of the box. Michael Olise controlled the ball with his first touch, drawing two Swedish defenders towards him before curling a perfectly concealed reverse pass into the left flank. Kylian Mbappé timed his run perfectly, beat the offside trap and grabbed the assist with a low, vicious shot past Zetterström and into the bottom right corner. It was a psychological blow before the final whistle.

Bakla Double Buffer (53′)

Sweden were aggressive again in the second half, pushing Anthony Elanga and Victor Jackres upfield and forcing turnovers. In just ten minutes, Sweden used Guikres’ aerial prowess to create several close chances. However, the French team’s centre-back combination of Saliba and Dayot Upamecano remained indestructible, which limited Sweden to a total of 8 shots throughout the night and only 3 shots on target. After absorbing Sweden’s brief spell, France turned the game around with a lightning counterattack in the 53rd minute.

After a Swedish corner kick was cleared by Rabiot, the ball fell to Lucas Digne on the left. Digne and Mbappe worked seamlessly together, with the latter pushing forward at an alarming rate. Mbappe drew the Swedish defense towards him before passing the ball to the overlapping Bradley Bakla. Bakola cut inside from the left wing and was followed by Gustav Lagerbjerg with a beautiful curling shot into the top right corner. The speed of the turn illustrates the terrifying sharpness of the French front.

Mbappe ends the game (74′)

Sweden, which was trailing 0-2, refused to surrender. Head coach Jon Dahl Thomason urged his team to move forward and sacrifice defensive stability for the sake of offense. This tactical shift led to their best chance of the game in the 68th minute when Dejan Kulusevski found Isak in the box, but Mike Maignan produced a brilliant reflex save to keep the clean sheet. As the game progressed, the statistical comparison between the two sides became more and more obvious. Although Sweden fought hard, their 81% passing accuracy hindered their pressure in the final third. France exploited the space vacated ruthlessly, winning nine corner kicks to Sweden’s one.The final blow came in the 74th minute. Aurélien Tchouaméni intercepted a loose ball in midfield and immediately headed into space. He fired a pinpoint pass to Adrien Rabiot, who sprinted into the box before firing a perfectly square pass to Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe latched on to the assist on the edge of the D area, anchored himself with one touch and unleashed a spectacular, physics-defying curling shot past the diving Zetterström.
